BOURBON — Several homes in Bourbon were apparently destroyed or significantly damaged Wednesday night when a strong storm raced through the town after dark.

Much of the damage appeared to be northeast of the downtown in a subdivision.

No serious injuries were reported.

Many residents were outside looking at the damage and helping clean up by 8 a.m.

The National Weather Service arrived early Thursday morning to survey damage and determine if the damage was caused by a tornado.

Meteorologist Lonnie Fisher said the damage in Bourbon is the worst in a recent spat of storms across northern Indiana.

Sunday's storm was more spread out across parts of northern Indiana, while Wednesday night's storm was more focused and intense, he said.

The storm’s intensity appears to have stretched from Culver to Bourbon and then just outside of Etna Green. State Road SR, north of Etna Green, was closed Thursday morning due to apparent damage to an electrical tower.

Among the many people out surveying the damage early Thureday were two teens, Addison Hammond and Braden Hooley, who said they were aware of several houses that were flattened or had lost their roofs in the storm.

"Last night there was an elderly couple that was trapped in the basement (when it collapsed," said Addison Hammond.

Marcia Keyser said she had been taking cover inside a home when a tornado siren shut off and she decided to take a look outdoors.

"I looked outside and the wind was blowing so hard it actually looked like it was waving, and then we heard a big noise and we went back to where we were sheltered," Keyser said.

Damage in the neighborhood was spotty and sporadic. Keyser lives a block away from where the worst damage could be found on Crocus Court.

"We have a little siding that's off ... and our shed moved just a little, but it's nothing compared with what these people have had," Keyser said.

Contrary to a report last night, downtown Bourbon escaped with little damage.

Also nearby, at least one semi tipped over on US 30, which required the closing of the highway for a while.

WARSAW – A small but intense storm north of Warsaw destroyed a mobile home in Whispering Pines Mobile Home Park and caused sporadic tree damage across the area.

The storm struck at about 3:50 p.m. with strong winds, rain, and dime-size hail pounding the area around Whispering Pines along Levi Lee Road.

Possibly the worst damage was on the east end of the mobile home park where a home was crushed in half by a large tree.

A young boy, translating for his mother said the Hispanic family of four was not home at the time of the storm.

Tree damage was common in the area.

Other damage was reported near Barbee and Chapman Lakes.

Power outages were also reported.

SR 13 was closed for a while because of a downed power line.

Kris Terrell a resident of Whispering Pines,  said she had just arrived home from work and was in a back room drying off from the heavy downpour when she heard a loud sound.

“I thought, 'oh, oh, that’s not normal,' ”  Terrell said.

“It sounded like really bad hail and then it went whoosh,” Terrell said. “It was fast. I think it was a low-grade tornado.”

Some trees appeared to be clipped off at the mid-point near her home. She described the damage as “a haircut to the trees.” 

Possibly the strangest storm damage image (see below) came from Phil Kuhn of a trampoline that was picked up by strong winds and left hanging across power lines near Barrington Hills north of the airport.

The National Weather Service is receiving many reports of damage from the early morning storms that swept across northern Indiana.

Damage is reported from LaPorte County, south to Cass and Whitley counties and as far east as Allen County.

Here is a small sprinkling of what has been reported, including a few items from Kosciusko  County: 

• Emergency Manager reports a tree down at Lake Street in Warsaw and loss of power over east Warsaw in Kosciusko County.
• Multiple trees down near Lake Wawasee and one fell across the channel blocking the waterway, per a public report on X/Twitter. 
• Several large trees uprooted on Ogden Point Road on Lake Wawasee. Also damage to a few boat lifts on the lake. 
• Emergency manager reports a tree blown down into a house in northwest Whitley County — no injuries reported at this time.
• Emergency manager reports four trees down with power lines on Nutmeg just south of Menominee Elementary in Plymouth.
• Photo on Facebook showing a grove of trees on fire due to a lightning strike. Public reports this occurred around midnight EDT in Middlebury.
• Large tree down on a house south of Pierceton.
• Elkhart Fire Department reports damage from Southdale Street to Main Street  between East Lusher Ave and East Hively Ave in southern Elkhart. Possible tornado damage. 
• Fire Department en route to reports of a tree into a house in Northwestern Whitley County. No reported injuries at this time.
• Tree into house confirmed by on-scene fire personnel. 2500 West Block of 700 North Columbia City. Unknown if any injuries.
