NORTH MANCHESTER — Manchester Community Schools canceled the last day of school today because of an incident that began several weeks ago.

That's when a student made a threat to cause harm on the last day of school.

The student was then taken to an out of town residential facility, according to news release issued to parents from the school.

But officials learned Wednesday that the student had left the facility without authorization

After consulting with the school board and law enforcement, superintendent Tony Cassel said they chose to cancel classes.

In a statement to parents, Cassel called the circumstances frustrating, adding that the safety of students and staff were the top priority.

Cassel said officials were making adjustments for students who still needed to turn in work on Thursday.

He said it was the school district's intention to go forward with Friday night's graduation plans "with additional appropriate security measures in place."
