News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — Two area lawmakers are developing a plan for US 30 that would address the Parker Street intersection — widely viewed as the most dangerous intersection along US 30 across all of Indiana.

State Senator Ryan Mishler and State Representative Craig Snow said they met with officials from the Indiana Department of Transportation earlier this month, which included a discussion of US 30 and specifically the proposed construction of an overpass over Parker Street and an interchange constructed further to the west at Springhill Road.

Mishler talked about the issue Saturday while in Warsaw and said something "needs to be done."

In their meeting, Mishler said they put forth some proposals.

He said he plans to track how that progresses and how INDOT is budgeting projects.

He credited Snow for taking the lead on the issue by developing maps and even talking to stakeholders.

“I think what we're working on together would be a really good plan moving forward for this area,” Mishler said.

An interchange at Springhill Road would serve as a new connection to US 30 and is a short distance from both Parkview Kosciusko Hospital and Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital.

Aside from traffic safety concerns, Mishler said the projects would be a big boost for economic development.

He also said the proposals also reflect Slate Auto's plans to bring nearly 2,000 workers to its future factory on Old Road 30 later this year.

“If they want to develop that corridor going to Slate, you've got to have something on 30. Once you put something on 30, I think you will see huge development coming around that area,” he said.

Snow said their proposal is similar to one in Whitley County, where Steel Dynamics Inc. worked with county officials and other industry to jump-start plans for the construction of at least two major intersections along US 30.

INDOT has previously endorsed the long-term plan of reconstructing the highway from Ohio to northwest Indiana, but aside from the initial progress in Whitley County, no money has been formally approved for initial steps toward specific construction segments.

Snow cautions that talks are preliminary and that it would take many years for construction to begin, if it is eventually approved.

Preliminary steps by consultants working with INDOT and the US 30 Coalition have progressed across the entire stretch of the highway over the past decade, but few developments have been made in the past two years.

News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — Warsaw officials have been lobbying for years for a specific site for construction of a VA clinic, and on Monday, one official said they’re eyeing a location on CR 200N near Parkview Kosciusko Hospital.

Efforts to bring a VA clinic to Warsw have been underway for several years, and Jeremy Skinner, director of community & economic development, said Monday they found an entity that agreed to place it adjacent to other recently constructed medical offices along CR 200N.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has increasingly relied on the use of third-party entities for construction projects.

Skinnner said they've been lobbying for that property because of its proximity to Parkview, Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital and US 30.

Skinner brought up the issue Monday at a city redevelopment commission meeting and said they are working on a memo of understanding that would be part of a sale of the land from Parkview Health to an unidentified LLC.

The clinic is expected to be about 16,000 square feet, and Skinner said they hope construction could begin this year or next.

The project is expected to cost roughly seven to eight million dollars, and Skinner said the city is ready to provide $1 million to cover some of the development costs.

Neither the MOU nor the financial transaction has been approved by the city, but Skinner addressed the rationale on Monday.

"When you think about the benefit that this will offer all of the veterans in Kosciusko County, people who have served our country, giving them easy access to the health care that they need in a shorter distance, a shorter travel ... that's definitely worth the city's participation," Skinner said.

He was also asked if the plan would come together if not for the city's financial support.

"They' ve been trying to put on (in Warsaw) for the last five years," Skinner said. "Does this help get it done? I think so, yes."

Money for the project would come from one of several tax increment finance funds controlled by the city.

WARSAW — Reconstruction of Anchorage Road in Warsaw will begin in earnest today with the first of many partial road closings that will continue into the fall.

The project will stretch from US 30 to SR 15.

The first segment to close will be from the railroad track to the east side of Kimal Drive.

Area residents and businesses have been given detailed instructions on how to access all nearby properties.

Residents in the closed area will have access to their homes at all times from the east and US 30.

Trash and recycling routes will remain on their normal scheduled days. Trash pickup may occur earlier than normal, so all cans should be placed at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on trash and recycle pick-up days.

A representative from the contractor, Structurepoint, will contact these residents in the coming days.

Unless visiting a business or residence on Anchorage Road, all motorists should use State Road 15 and US 30 to detour the closure.

Reconstruction will result in an additional third lane, sidewalks and improved utilities.

The project is anticipated to conclude in late fall.

News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — Marketplace of Warsaw, which will add Hobby Lobby to its lineup later this year, announced on Tuesday that another store, Five Below, will occupy significant space on the west side of the shopping center.

John Murphy, chief financial officer and partner with Sullivan Wickley, which owns the property located along US 30, said they have signed a lease with Five Below, a national retail discount chain with 1,900 stores.

The newest tenant will be located between Bealls and Ollie's, where about half a dozen storefronts have been empty for years.

Five Below will span 10,000 square feet and will serve as a secondary anchor, he said.

Renovations, he said, will include a new facade.

Both stores are expected to open this fall, he said.

He credits Hobby Lobby for the newest addition.

"People like to follow Hobby," Murphy said.

[caption id="attachment_127250" align="alignright" width="440"] Asphalt from the parking lot on the east end of the Marketplace of Warsaw has already been removed ahead of the upcoming demolition of vacant stores where a Hobby Lobby will be constructed.
The two new stores add to what has become an impressive turnaround for the property.

"At that point, the center will be mostly full, and we are incredibly pleased with the business plan we've implemented," Murphy said.

"We're very appreciative to the city of Warsaw for their vision and their support," he said.

Work on Hobby Lobby is already underway.

Instead of using the existing vacant storefront space, Hobby Lobby will construct a 50,000 square foot store that will replace a string of empty stores on the east end.

Sullivan Wickley has been working to revitalize the shopping center for about five years after reaching an agreement with the city to support the redevelopment effort.

City officials became involved after many tenants left amid a serious need for repairs and concerns that the entire property could fall further into distress.

The city provided a $1.4 million bond/investment in 2022 to support the initial improvements.

Hobby Lobby announced its plans in September of 2025 and the city council responded with a $250,00 foregiveabe loan to assist with the new construction.

The newest tenant will be located between Bealls and Ollie’s, where about half a dozen storefronts have been empty for years.

Five Below will span 10,000 square feet and will serve as a secondary anchor, he said.

Renovations, he said, will include a new facade.

Both stores are expected to open this fall, he said.

He credits Hobby Lobby for the newest addition.

“People like to follow Hobby,” Murphy said.

Asphalt from the parking lot on the east end of the Marketplace of Warsaw has already been removed ahead of the upcoming demolition of vacant stores where a Hobby Lobby will be constructed.
The two new stores add to what has become an impressive turnaround for the property.

“At that point, the center will be mostly full, and we are incredibly pleased with the business plan we’ve implemented,” Murphy said.

“We’re very appreciative to the city of Warsaw for their vision and their support,” he said.

The addition of Five Below will leave only a few stores still vacant, but Murphy sounded confident.

“When you have a center of gravity (like) Hobby Lobby, there will be no problem leasing those up in the future,” Murphy said.

The signal outage is causing significant traffic delays in the area, and the city is encouraging motorists to plan alternate routes and allow for additional travel time while the signal is being repaired.

Eastbound traffic was backed up this morning as far back as Depuy Synthes, said one motorist.

The city said INDOT has crews on-site trying to restore the signal, adding that "However, at this time, there is no estimated time of completion."

He was headed west on 30 near 331, a few miles west near Pioneer Drive in Plymouth, when police took him into custody, but it was unclear how that unfolded.

The stolen vehicle was a black 2018 Jeep, but no other details were available about when the vehicle was taken.

Jeffrey was booked for resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 Felony.

Agencies involved in the incident included the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Bourbon and Plymouth police departments.
