WARSAW — Climate information from the National Weather Service for Fort Wayne and South Bend shows 2024 was the warmest year ever for northern Indiana.

The average temperature for the year in Fort Wayne was 54.4 degrees, which was 3.5 degrees above normal. That represents the warmest since records were first began in 1897.

The average temperature for the year in South Bend was 53.9  degrees, 4.6 degrees above normal. That also represents the warmest since records were first began in 1897.

Both cities saw a single-day high temperature in 2024 of 97 degrees.

Fort Wayne has 35.4 inches of total precipitation, 4.0 inches below normal.

South Bend had 40.1 inches of total precipitation, nearly one inch above normal.

Fort Wayne had 13.7 inches of total snowfall, 19.9 inches below normal.

South Bend had 36.3 inches of total snowfall, 28.2 inches below normal.

In terms of sky cover, South Bend had 85 cloudy days compared to 141 in Fort Wayne in 2024. Typically, South Bend sees more cloudy days than Fort Wayne because of the increased chance of snow in South Bend each winter, according to a meteorologist in the North Webster office.
