WINONA LAKE — When the My Team Triumph Firecracker 5K kicks off Saturday morning in Winona Lake, it will mark the biggest turnout in its 12-year history.

My Team Triumph races are open to anyone, but seek to provide an inclusive experience by pairing captains with disabilities with other runners who serve as pushers.

This year, more than 150 people pre-registered, and another 20 will likely sign up on the day of the event.

They’ll be joined by about 20 captains as they make their way through the Heritage Trail System, which is all paved.

Barb Martz, who works as a special education teacher, is president of My Team Triumph of Northern Indiana, which does about a dozen races a year. 

“We just want to show everybody how you can do it no matter what,” Martz said recently. “And if you can't, that's what we're here for. We're here to help you.”

Saturday's race is a major fundraiser for the group. 

“It's really cool they just love us and they support us and they sponsor us,” she said.

The race begins at 9 a.m. near the Winona Lake Limitless Park, and registration will remain open before the start.
