LARWILL — Dr. Amy Korus was hired as Whitko’s superintendent of schools during the school board’s Monday regular meeting.

She replaces Dr. Tom Edington, who served as interim superintendent since June.

Edington stepped into the interim role after Tim Pivarnik resigned unexpectedly in May.

Korus starts her new job at Whitko on Jan. 1, according to a news release from the school corporation.

Korus, a 1991 Whitko graduate, said when she left high school, future plans did not include returning to her alma mater. Now, however, there’s no place she’d rather be.

“I’m honored that you picked me for this position. When I graduated in ‘91, I would’ve never thought to come back here as your leader. When I left high school, I had bigger plans, other things on my plate,” she said.

Korus said she’s always believed in public education.

“When people criticize public education I take it personally, and I feel it's my responsibility to present the research and data showing what we’re doing in Indiana is working. I look forward to doing that for our community, talking about the great things we’re doing at Whitko and the great things we’re going to do at Whitko,” she said.

“I am thrilled to welcome Amy Korus as our new superintendent,” said school board president Annette Arnold. “She is a knowledgeable administrator of education; she’s familiar with our community and has only the best interests of our Whitko students and families at heart.”

“I’m so happy for Amy,” Edington said. “Her returning home as leader is a wonderful thing. I know the board will be in good hands. I know that the Whitko community and staff members will benefit from her leadership.”

Korus was assistant superintendent at East Noble School Corporation for the last two years.
From 2018 to 2022, Korus was principal at Manchester Elementary School. She taught at Indian Springs Middle School, Columbia City; at Washington Center Elementary School, Fort Wayne; at Heartland Elementary and Western Avenue schools in Geneva, Ill.; and at Lincoln Prairie and Winston Churchill Elementary schools in Schaumburg, Ill.

She has a doctorate in education, a specialist in education and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Ball State University; a high abilities license from Purdue University and a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northeastern Illinois University.

Korus, Columbia City, attended Monday evening’s meeting with her husband, children and her parents.
