Update: Whitley County Inmate Died Of Asphyxiation

Update: The autopsy results are in for the death of Kevin J. Minnix, the 48 year old man who was arrested, then found dead in a holding cell at the Whitley County Jail. The cause of death.. Asphyxiation. According to the Whitley County Sheriff's Department, Minnix was found with the string of his hooded sweat shirt tied around his neck and tied to a door hinge. CPR and AED efforts to revive Minnix continued by the staff and medics for 40 minutes, but were unsuccesful.

Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a 48 year old male inmate of the Whitley County Jail after he was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell last night. Preliminary investigation indicated that at approximately 2:00 p.m., 48 year old Kevin Minnix of Columbia City was brought into the Whitley County Jail by one of their Deputies and placed into a holding cell. About 6 and a half hours later, Officers found Minnix unconscious and unresponsive in his cell. They immediately entered and began performing life saving measures until Whitley County EMS arrived some five minutes later. Minnix was pronounced dead at the scene after medics attempted for 25 minutes to save his life.  An autopsy has been scheduled for today to help determine the cause and manner of Minnix’s death. No further information will be released until the results of the autopsy have been released by the Whitley County Coroner.
