Warsaw Drug Deal Turns Into Homicide

WPD Press Release – Warsaw Police have two (2) suspects in custody and one (1) person is dead after a drug deal turned into a traffic homicide.
Around 9:22 p.m. Friday evening, February 17, 2017, Warsaw Police were called to the 700 block of North Cook Street for a car versus pedestrian crash, where the driver had fled the scene. Upon arrival, police located a black 2010 Ford Mustang off the west side of the road. A 29 year old male was found underneath the Mustang suffering serious injuries. Warsaw Wayne Fire Territory extricated the male and he was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital where he died from his injuries. Warsaw Police and the Kosciusko Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Derek Davidson of South Bend.
Only minutes after the crash, an Indiana State Police officer located the driver several blocks away and took him into custody without incident.
The initial investigation indicates that a Marijuana drug deal was set up between several sub jects but when it came to the exchange, the driver was battered and robbed. The driver got to his Mustang, backed up and then sped forward into the victim pinning the victim under the car. The driver then backed up and drove forward several times before jumping out of the car and fleeing on foot.
The driver is identified as 18 year old Daniel Duenas of Winona Lake. He was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital for alcohol and drug testing, but later transported to the Kosciusko County Jail and initially charged with voluntary manslaughter. He is being held on a prosecutorial hold awaiting results of an autopsy and investigative reports before formal charges are filed.
Warsaw Police also arrested 18 year old, Jarrod Miller, of Warsaw, with robbery and resisting law enforcement for his involvement in the drug deal. He is also being held on a prosecutorial hold awaiting results of the investigation for formal charges.
Warsaw Police were assisted by the Ind iana State Police, Winona Lake Police Department, Warsaw Wayne Fire Territory, Lutheran EMS Kosciukso, Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office, and the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office.
