Two people are in custody after a gunshot was fired in an apartment building.

Warsaw Police responded to the 200 block of North Columbia Street on Friday after reports of a shot fired through a woman’s bedroom ceiling.

When officers checked the apartment above the woman’s, they saw drug paraphernalia in plain view and smelled marijuana. Two boxes of handgun ammunition were also found on an end table.

The residents of that apartment were 26-year-old Joseph Miller and 31-year-old Rachel Banaszek. Both were arrested on drug charges. Miller also faces a charge of recklessness with a deadly weapon.

Court documents indicate Miller was reaching for a gun and dropped it. That’s when the gun reportedly went off. Miller initially fled the scene, but returned after being called by Banaszek.

The gun used to fire the shot was turned in to police by Banaszek.

Marijuana and methamphetamine were found in the apartment once a search warrant was granted.
