A Warsaw man is in custody on preliminary charges of murder after allegedly killing a 2-year-old girl.
Christopher A. Grimmett, 29, of Warsaw, was arrested by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies and detectives and charged with murder this morning.
Sheriff’s deputies responded last night at 10:24 p.m. to a residence at 53 EMS C17 Lane, Warsaw, in regards to an original call of a custody complaint. During the initial investigation, officers met with Grimmett, who stated that he had been babysitting his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter, Adalin P. Stamper, earlier Thursday and that the maternal grandmother had picked up the child.
Officers determined that this was false and began to back-track Grimmett’s path during the evening that eventually led them to the location of 1835 Sue Avenue, Warsaw.
Grimmett was allegedly at his brother’s residence on Sue Avenue earlier in the afternoon with Adalin Stamper.
With the assistance of the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, deputies obtained consent from Grimmett’s brother and sister-in-law to search the residence, along with the property. During a search of the address, sheriff deputies located a shallow grave in the back yard where the body of Adalin Stamper was uncovered, according to 1st Sgt. Chad Hill, Public Information Officer.
The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office was summoned to the scene, along with the Kosciusko County Major Crimes Task Force scene technicians.
Grimmett provided a statement to Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Detectives that led to his arrest. Grimmett is currently being held on a prosecutorial hold for murder in the Kosciusko County Jail.
At this time, the cause of death is still under investigation pending an autopsy.
