With the Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals granting Tillie Rich’s request Monday for a special exception to permit a home occupation at 1514 E. Center St., Rich now will be able to conduct psychic readings from her residence.
“A spiritual reader is, I do palm readings, Tarot cards, shocker cleansing, shocker healings. It’s basically consultation one-on-one. Just like you pay a psychologist, you would just come and get a psychic reading – past, present and future that we go through,” Rich explained after the BZA meeting.
She said it was passed on from generation to generation in her family.
“My grandmother, my great-grandmother – it’s just something that has been passed on for years,” she said.
Her phone number will be on her sign once it goes up. A person will call that number to make an appointment. She will accept some walk-ins, but mostly she does readings by appointment to make sure she has time.
During the meeting, Warsaw Assistant Planner Tim Dombrosky told the board he recommended approval for the request “based on the fact the Center Street corridor is designed to handle the traffic for commercial enterprises.”
There will be parking in the rear and will not be any additional cuts, he said. The only employee will be Rich.
Dombrosky said Rich also requested a 3-foot by 4-foot freestanding yard sign, which is similar to what used to be at that location. The previous home occupation out of that residence was a real estate office. He said he didn’t see any problems with the sign.
No comments in opposition to the request were made.
Rich told the board she would be the only one working there, her living quarters are upstairs with the office downstairs, the sign would have LED lights to give it visibility, there would be no outside storage and no equipment. Graycraft will install the landscaping lights and sign, she said.
Board member Jeff Johnson said, “There was a business there before and I have no problem with it.”
Board members Dan Smith and Tammy Dalton agreed, and Dalton’s motion to approve the exception was unanimously approved.
