More than 200 new laws go into effect in Indiana beginning today.

These laws were passed by the House and Senate and later signed by Governor Holcomb. The laws cover everything from how Hoosiers vote to police behavior and even the state’s official snack.

Some of the new laws include the following:

-Under HB 1006, the Indiana law enforcement training board must establish mandatory training in de-escalation. Additionally, any police officer who turns off a body worn camera with the intent to conceal a criminal act will face consequences.

-Hoosiers applying for a license to carry a handgun will no longer have to pay a $125 fee. If you have already bought and obtained a permit, you do not get your money back.

-Theft of a component part of a vehicle, including a catalytic converter, is now a Level 6 felony. A Level 6 felony is the least serious kind of felony. Indiana has 6 levels of felonies plus murder. The lower the number, the worse the crime.

-There’s also a new law that allows a person admitted as a patient to a hospital or outpatient surgical facility to receive visitation by specified individuals during a declared emergency.

-HB 1230 says if a child’s parent is unable to give up custody of a child under Indiana’s safe haven law, the child’s parent may request that an emergency medical services provider take custody of the child by dialing 911.

-SB 177 permits an immediate family member of a deceased individual to request the superintendent of the state police department to conduct a new investigation into the death of the individual under certain circumstances.

-Popcorn is now Indiana’s official state snack.
