INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis Firefighters responded to an apartment complex that caught fire Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the El Dorado apartments on Green Ash Court around 3:30 a.m., east of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

IFD says about 50 residents were evacuated from the building. Firefighters used ground ladders to help rescue 12 people.

Only one person was taken to a hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation.

The fire was contained to just one apartment, but smoke filled most of the building, according to IFD. Firefighters had the fire under control just before 4 a.m.

IFD says it started in an apartment on the second floor. The woman who lived there told firefighters that she woke up and noticed a fire near an electrical outlet in her bedroom. She and her three children escaped the building along with their dog. The woman pulled the fire alarm on her way out.
