Data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, University of Nebraska

September turned into one of the driest months of the year, and made for the driest September in 16 years.

The weather station at Warsaw Municipal Airport recorded just 0.42 inches of rain, making it the driest September since 2004, when only 0.24 inches of rain fell. September’s totals also made for the third straight month of seeing less than an inch of rain.

South Bend also reported a dry month, finishing nearly two inches of rain below their normal monthly totals, while Fort Wayne recorded an above normal rainfall month by about half an inch. Indianapolis set a new record in September, only receiving 0.12″ of rain the entire month, making it the driest September ever.

Much of the area remains in a moderate drought, with 25 percent of Indiana now being included in that status. Just over 78 percent of the state overall is now considered “abnormally dry.”
