Elkhart man causes own death while fleeing from police

ELKHART (95.3 MNC) — The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office says a man from Elkhart caused his own death while fleeing from the police.

Police say 31 year-old Michael Mattox accelerated when they attempted to pull him over on June 9th. They were responding to a report of a woman screaming for help in the area of Morehouse Avenue in Elkhart.

Mattox ran through a number of stop signs and signals while heading north on Main Street at speeds up to 90 miles per hour. He blew through the safety arm of a train stop just before a high-speed train arrived, and crashed into the post office. He was found dead at the scene and an excessive amount of alcohol was reportedly found in his bloodstream, as well as meth.
