An Elkhart man was found guilty of domestic battery and theft July 1 after he was accused of hitting a woman he lived with in front of her children and threatening her with a steak knife in November 2013.
Darius Crockett, 35, received his verdict after a two-day trial, according to a news release from the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office.
During the incident, Crockett hit the victim in the head and face after she refused to punish a 5-year-old child who was touching Crockett while he slept, according to the news release. He then grabbed a steak knife, took the woman into a bathroom and held the knife to her throat while threatening to kill her.
The woman tried to escape and Crockett pushed her on top of a 1-year-old infant. Crockett then packed a bad and left with the victim’s cell phone and keys.
The woman took her children out of the home and into a shelter.
He could spend up to six years in prison, according to state sentencing guidelines. Crockett is scheduled to be sentenced during a hearing at 2 p.m. July 30.
