Grace College and Mission Point Community Church will facilitate the tenth annual Supermarket Sweep on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Owen’s Market, 2211 E. Center St., Warsaw. The community is invited to participate by shopping for items between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Grace volunteers will provide grocery lists and collect the items once purchased. Supermarket Sweep 2019 sponsors include Nextremity Solutions, Paypro Tec, and Wildman Business Group.
With the holidays approaching, Supermarket Sweep is a fun and easy way to help local families in a tangible way. Participants shop for non-perishable food items and baby products which are then donated to organizations that support community members in need. This year, donations will go to Fellowship Missions, Our Father’s House, Combined Community Services, the Salvation Army and Heartline Pregnancy Center.
Grace students, faculty and staff participate in a large way to support this mission. Grace teams shop while competing for prizes in categories such as the most money spent, the most money saved and the most community or staff members present.
The annual service project is organized by SERVE – the student-led ministry club at Grace. According to SERVE Coordinator Katie Miller, “Supermarket Sweep is one of my favorite events of the year. The students have an absolute blast while also meeting substantial needs in the community!”
Last year’s Supermarket Sweep raised more than $23,000 worth of food and products in 11 hours. This included 11,015 diapers and 17,020 pounds of food providing for more than 900 families in Kosciusko County. More than 50 volunteers participated.
Director of Student Involvement at Grace, Kearstin Criswell, hopes this year will be a record-breaking year.
“It’s amazing what can be achieved when a community rallies together. Our students are always eager to serve at this event! We hope that many others will make plans to participate on October 30 and help us provide for our neighbors in need this holiday season,” Criswell said.
