WARSAW — Fire Chief Brian Mayo saw distant smoke while participating in an event at the Warsaw Municipal Airport and called it in himself.

It turned out to be a grass fire -just northeast of the airport.

Mayo and two other firefighters from Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory — who were at the airport showing off emergency equipment for Cardinal Services clients — took one of the fire trucks from the show and headed to the grassfire on CR 350 near Barrington Hills.

“I drove over because it looked intense,” Mayo said.

The fire at 733 East CR 350N heavily damaged an empty mobile home, a fishing boat and two trailers.

Fire crews were working to keep it from spreading into a wooded area.

A nearby business to the west was not believed to have been damaged.

Plain Township Fire Department responded first to the fire. Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory and Winona Lake Fire Department also responded.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 p.m. and necessitated the closing of part of 350N.

No injuries were reported.

The event at the airport featured a variety of aircraft and big emergency vehicles and is a chance for disabled clients at Cardinal to see the machinery up close.
