Leesburg Woman Seriously Injured In Crash With Train


KCSD Press Release- A Leesburg woman was seriously injured after colliding with a train this afternoon in Kosciusko County.

Kosciusko County Sheriff's Deputies and emergency personnel responded to a 4:32 p.m. 9-1-1 call today of a train/car crash near the intersection of County Road 600 North and Old State Road 15.  Responders located a female, identified as Lorraine J. Amerkanos, 58, Leesburg, trapped inside her vehicle.  Amerkanos was extricated and transported by Multi-Township E.M.S. to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Indiana, in serious condition with multiple injuries.

Kosciusko County F.A.C.T. team members stated that a preliminary investigation of the crash has determined that Amerkanos was eastbound on County Road 600 North, approaching the Norfolk Southern railroad crossing.  According to witness statements, she failed to look for the northbound freight train, and pulled directly into its path.
