Mentone Town Council Hears Housing Proposal

TIMES UNION REPORTS – Mentone Town Council was approached Wednesday about putting multiple units on one property.

Dennis Boyd, Warsaw, said he wanted to know the feasibility of putting multiple units of duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes on the property at 516 Broadway St. He also wanted to know if it was zoned to where a variance would be needed.

Town attorney Andrew Grossnickle asked if the original structure would remain. Boyd said the structure would remain for the short term. If he could put four triplexes or four fourplexes, then the original structure would be the last unit to be taken down to put something in its place.

Councilman Tim Croy said he couldn’t find anything in their ordinances that said more than one unit couldn’t be put on one property.

Grossnickle said the property looks like it’s zoned residential. He said, as far as the variances, he’d have to check ordinances, but Boyd might have to notify the neighbors of what he wanted to be done and see if there’s any objections.

Grossnickle gave Boyd his information and asked him to call him to discuss the issue further once he’s had time to look into the ordinances and the situation.

In other business, the Council decided to wait on a decision in regards to quotes to replace a storm pipe in an alley between Franklin and Walnut, south of Monroe and north of Jefferson.

James Emans, town engineer, said the sewer has failed.

There is a gas line in the way, so they’re waiting for NIPSCO to move the line, Emans said. NIPSCO said they are going to move the line this week.

Emans said the town received three quotes for the work, with one of the three quotes being deemed nonresponsive.

He said the question is if the quotes were within the town’s budget, because the town would have to have a budget in order to award the quotes. He recommended the Council hold the quotes until the next Council meeting and take the quotes under advisement. Emans said he’ll prepare a recommendation.
