Peru Man Arrested Following Fatal Drunk Driving Crash

A Peru man was arrested following a drunk driving crash that killed one person on Sunday evening.

Indiana State Police say 21-year old Andrew Winch allegedly ignored the stop sign at the intersection of Fifth and Benton Streets in Peru, and hit a vehicle with three people inside. One of the passengers, 83-year old Mary Hipskind of Peru, died at the scene from her injuries. Another passenger in the vehicle was flown to Fort Wayne with life-threatening injuries.

ISP says further investigation showed that Winch had a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit at the time of the crash.

Winch faces several charges including felony operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and reckless homicide.

The crash remains under investigation.
