Syracuse Woman Scammed By “Online Boyfriend”

A Syracuse woman was recently a victim of a potential scam and lost over $100,000. According to a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department report, the woman told an officer in late June that she had wired approximately $150,000 to a man she met online and with whom, allegedly, she was having a romantic relationship. The woman told police she had never met the man, who identified himself as John Tony Hagen, but continued to send money to him. However, she said, when she would send money, she would send it to a Jacob Adewale Abiola. According to sheriff’s department Sgt. Chad Hill, both names are likely fraudulent. The woman told police she had kept receipts and other documentation regarding the amount of money sent and the report was forwarded to the Detective Division. The incident is still under investigation.
