A pair of crashes shut down all lanes of the westbound Indiana Toll Road Wednesday morning.
Indiana State Police on the Toll Road say a semi traveling on U.S. 421 drove down an embankment onto the westbound lanes of the Toll Road below, and struck a pickup truck pulling a trailer.
This happened near the Michigan City exit. Westbound lanes were shut down for a few hours to clear the scene and clean up a large amount of oil and diesel fuel on the highway. One person suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash.
State police say the semi driver who drove off 421 was checking his GPS for directions in the moments before he dropped down onto the Toll Road.
A second crash, believed to have been related to the traffic standstill, involved 3 semis and happened a short time later about three miles east of the LaPorte exit.
There were no injuries reported but a large quantity of paint was spilled onto the westbound Toll Road as a result of that wreck.
Those happened after a Tuesday night crash in Lake County. There was a four-vehicle crash on the Toll Road injured two drivers in the westbound lanes.
It happened about a mile east of the U.S. 12/S.R. 912 exit shortly before 6 p.m.
An SUV lost a tire and hit one car before bounced into the path of a semi, which jacknifed, and was hit by another semi.
The two semi drivers were both transported to a hospital in Gary with non-life-threatening injuries.
