Three were injured and transported from the scene of multi-vehicle crash after a Nappanee man allegedly refused to stop for police and caused the crash.

44-year old Walter David Hawthorne attempted to pass two vehicles along Armstrong Road at a high rate of speed in a no passing zone according to police. As a deputy attempted a traffic stop, Hawthorne refused to stop and continued along CR 500 N at speeds in excess of 100 MPH.

Authorities say as Hawthorne approached State Road 13, he ran a red light and struck a southbound pick-up truck, driven by 36-year old Joshua Shepard of North Webster. The truck then careened into a car, driven by 34-year old Christopher Ousley of Leesburg, which overturned, trapping Ousley inside.

Hawthorne was flown from the scene by Parkview Samaritan Air Ambulance, while Ousley and a passenger in his car were taken to a Fort Wayne hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
