Three officers injured while attempting to rescue a boy from a house fire

An Indiana State Trooper, Steuben County Sheriff Deputy, and an Angola City Police Officer were all injured and hospitalized after trying to rescue a three year old boy from a house fire just after midnight in Steuben County.

Two troopers responded to the 4200 block of W 100 N after hearing a report that a child was inside of a burning residence.  Upon arrival, they saw two adult males outside of the home, one of them was the boys father yelling that his son was inside his bedroom. The Troopers, the deputy, and the Angola Officer attempted to enter the burning home.

They were unable to locate the boy due to the level of the fire, heat and smoke.  A short time later the boy was found alive and unconscious by the Angola Fire Department.  He was transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne.

The Toll Road Trooper was treated for smoke inhalation, the Angola Officer was also treated for smoke inhalation and had a laceration to his hand. the Deputy was treated for smoke inhalation, but later transferred to a Fort Wayne Hospital.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Indiana State Police, the Angola Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
