Unemployment rates rebound nicely following spike at start of COVID pandemic last April

One year ago, Kosciusko County, along with the rest of the state and much of the US saw one of the first spikes in unemployment due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In April 2020, Kosciusko County’s unemployment rate was 17.9 percent, which was higher than both the state and national average. One year later, unemployment rates are one of the best in the state. The latest from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development shows the county unemployment rate at 2.9 percent, down from 3.7 percent in March. This ties for the 10th lowest unemployment rate in the state.

Nearby LaGrange County had the worst unemployment rate in the state last April at 32.7 percent, but this April, the second best at 2.3 percent.

The state’s unemployment rate in April was 4.2 percent, down from 4.6 percent in March, while the US rate also improved to 5.7 percent, down from 6.2 percent.
