Vandalism damages War of 1812 memorial in Peru

PERU, Ind. (AP) — State conservation officers are investigating vandalism that damaged a memorial to honors soldiers killed in the War of 1812.

The state Department of Natural Resources’ law enforcement division says nine tombstones, a memorial marker and a flag pole were damaged at the 1812 Soldiers Memorial at Mississinewa Reservoir.

The damage, which was apparently caused by a BB gun, was reported July 20 by a concerned citizen.

The damaged memorial honors soldiers who gave their lives at the Mississinewa Battlegrounds during the War of 1812 with Britain.

Conservation officers are seeking the public’s help finding the suspect or suspects. Tips about the case can be reported anonymously through Indiana Conservation Officer Central Dispatch at 812-837-9536.
