Warsaw students heading to state chess tournament

Nine students from Warsaw Community Schools will attend the Indiana Individual State Chess Tournament at Pike High School in Indianapolis.

The event, which hosts competitors from the elementary to high school level, will begin at 9 am on Jan. 28.

In order to qualify to attend the event, students had to place high enough at the regional competition on Jan. 14 hosted at Goshen.

Students will play five to six chess matches depending on their division. The competitions will take place against other students throughout the state.

The event lasts all day and competitors are scored one point for each win and a half point for each draw. Final placement in the competition is determined by students’ scores, with tiebreakers based on the quality of their wins.

Students attending this year’s state competition include: Brandon Chan, Warsaw High School – 12th and under JV; Theo Crabtree, Lincoln – 6th and under JV; Kaitlyn Evans, Madison – 6th and under JV; Teddy Grandon, Lincoln – 3rd and under championship; McKale Hagg, Madison – 6th and under JV; Jacob Kissling, Edgewood – 8th and under championship; Shruti Mutthiah, Madison – 6th and under JV; Ashlan Oliver, Lincoln – 3rd and under championship; Max Vinkemeier – 6th and under championship.
