Woman dead, two-year-old injured in pedestrian crash in Elkhart

ELKHART — A woman is dead and her two-year-old girl was injured after they were struck by a car shortly before midnight Thursday in Elkhart.

The crash happened at 11:37 p.m. in the 3300 block of South Nappanee Street.

An initial investigation indicates that a BMW struck a woman and her child as they were crossing the street, according to Elkhart City Police.

Police say a 28-year-old woman died early this morning from her injuries.

Elkhart Fire Department medics rendered first aid and transported the girl to a hospital for treatment of a head injury. She was in stable condition. 

Neither the names of the victims nor the driver were immediately released.

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
