NORTH WEBSTER — Northern Indiana experienced a significant hailstorm Thursday night.
The National Weather Service in North Webster reported widespread reports of hail ranging from one to two inches in diameter, but the largest sample came from Huntington County, where the weather service documented one found in Mount Etna comparable to the size of a lemon.
Many communities saw hailstones measuring between one and two inches, and NWS had one report from Claypool of one that was nearly nine-tenths of an inch.
The weather service predicted that large hail was possible in north central Indiana about nine hours before the storm struck.
The weather service plans to survey damage associated with thunderstorms in Wabash and Huntington counties following severe thunderstorms that moved through the area on Thursday night.
The analysis will help to determine if it spawned a tornado or another weather factor.
Numerous areas across northern Indiana also had severe thunderstorm warnings issued early Thursday night.
A photo of possibly the biggest hailstone that fell Thursday night was documented by a couple living north of Mount Etna in Huntington County, and was similar in size to a lemon.
