North Webster Man Arrested for Attempting to Rob ATM

A North Webster man is in jail after attempting to steal money from an ATM.
David A. Baker, 53, 811 S. Main St., North Webster, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday on burglary charges. His bond was set at $10,250.
According to a probable cause affidavit from the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office, on Feb. 14 a North Webster Police Department law enforcement officer responded to a burglary to a MutualBank ATM machine at the North Webster American Legion.
The officer arrived and observed the front of the ATM machine had been pried on in several different areas, including the area where the money was located, in an attempt to remove the money from the machine. The subject was unable to obtain any money from the ATM machine.
The officer spoke with a member of the American Legion who advised he came to the Legion around 6 p.m. and observed a male subject standing in front of the ATM machine.
The officer spoke with a Legion employee, who advised she found the ATM machine had been pried on at around 7 p.m.
The officer spoke with a MutualBank employee who advised the machine had been pried on or in the area where the money was located. The employee took possession of the money and secured the ATM machine.
The officer obtained the surveillance video from the American Legion. In the video, a male subject can be observed standing in front of the ATM machine making motions as appearing to pry on the machine. The male subject also was on his knees with the same type of prying motion.
A member of the American Legion was shown the surveillance video and he identified the male subject prying on the ATM as the same subject standing in front of the ATM machine when he arrived.
An American Legion employee said she recognized the subject in the surveillance video as a subject that had been brought over to the American Legion and signed in by another man who lives at the Lodge in North Webster.
The officer checked the Legion sign-in book and found the subject had signed in as David Baker. The officer contacted the Lodge and found Baker also lived at the Lodge.
The officer went to the Lodge and the door was answered by a subject who identified himself as Baker. The officer was able to identify him as the same subject in the surveillance video at the ATM machine.
The officer found Baker was convicted of theft Feb. 28, 2003, in Elkhart County Superior Court 6.
