A Notre Dame graduate student was arrested Tuesday, April 26, after police say they found hundreds of child pornography files on his computer.
Yuzhang Cui, 26, was charged with one count of child exploitation, a level 5 felony, and two counts of possession of child pornography, both level 6 felonies.
Cui was arrested after investigators with the St. Joseph County Police Cybercrimes Unit downloaded child porn files from an IP address associated with Notre Dame, according to court documents.
Officers secured a search warrant and went to Cui’s dorm. They searched his laptop and found hundreds of files of child pornography photos and videos on it, as well as personal documents that confirmed the laptop belonged to Cui.
The photos and videos, which depicted girls as young as 6 being molested and raped by unidentifiable men, were shared with other people on the internet through filesharing programs, according to court documents.
Investigators do not believe Cui’s roommate was involved with the downloads.
Cui is being held at St. Joseph County Jail on $50,000 Corporate surety or $5,000 cash bond, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon, April 28.
