Police: Amber Alert abductor in South Bend had syringe in possession

A woman is in jail and a boy is safe after a statewide Amber Alert was issued Thursday morning in South Bend.

The Amber Alert was issued shortly after 6:30 a.m. for 9-year-old John D. Gyuriak. Police believed that he had been taken by his non-custodial mother, 29-year-old Areca Nicole Gyuriak.

Within three hours of the alert being issued, the South Bend Tribune reports a tipster informed officers that the tan 2008 Dodge Charger that Areca was believed to be driving was found at a BP gas station at the intersection of Western and Mayflower.

Police arrived and found the boy and his mother still there. A second, younger child was also found in the car and was taken into protective custody pending release to family.

Areca Gyuriak was taken into custody and is initially charged with possession of a syringe.
