Reminders for spring cleanups at Warsaw, Silver Lake and Palestine cemeteries

WARSAW — Here are updates on spring cleanup happening at three area cemeteries.

Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw

The city of Warsaw-Oakwood Cemetery is asking that all winter decorations that have been placed in or on the ground at gravesites be removed as soon as possible to allow for maintenance of the cemetery grounds.

According to the Board of Regents rules and regulations, grave blankets should have been removed by March 1. The remaining blankets are being removed by cemetery staff and placed near the shop area for owners to claim. The disposal of leftover blankets will be on March 13.

All decorations for spring, summer and fall must be placed on the monument’s cement foundation, monument base or on top of the monument. Decorations placed in or on the ground will be removed.

For safety reasons, glass vases/decorations are not permitted as well as shepherd’s hooks. To obtain a copy of the rules and regulations, please visit the cemetery office or go online at warsaw.in.gov and use the city of Warsaw’s official website.

Great appreciation goes out to the family and friends of deceased loved ones for following the cemetery rules and in doing so allowing the staff to properly and efficiently care for the cemetery.

Lakeview Cemetery in Silver Lake

The board of directors of Lakeview Cemetery in Silver Lake reminding patrons that all faded winter grave decorations need be removed by Wednesday, March 15, weather and ground conditions permitting.

Any decorations remaining after that date will be discarded.

Remove any decorations you want to keep prior to or on March 15.

In addition, decorations not in compliance with cemetery regulations will be removed as well.

New decorations may be placed after the spring cleanup is completed.

Palestine Cemetery

The Board of Directors of the Palestine Cemetery, Inc., Palestine reminds its patrons that all grave decorations must be removed or brought into compliance with the cemetery regulations by April 1, to allow for spring cleanup. 

Decorations not in compliance with cemetery regulations after April 1 will be discarded. 

The following are the regulations of the Palestine Cemetery regarding plantings, flowers, and shrubbery:

  • All flowers must be placed within the line of the headstone, on cement or in a cement urn, or fastened to the headstone securely. No wires, glass, shepherd’s hooks, or hanging baskets may be set in the ground.
  • All shrubbery shall be maintained or it will be removed at the owner’s expense.
  • Winter grave blankets are permitted if removed by April 1.
  • All plantings and/or shrubbery must have approval of the Cemetery Board prior to planting.
