Syracuse Welcomes New Officer

The Syracuse Town Council held its regular monthly meeting last night and welcomed a new police officer, among other things.
Kyle Denton was sworn in as the newest addition to the Syracuse Police Department. Denton previously served as a reserve officer in Syracuse for over two years. Several members of Denton’s family were in attendance to congratulate him on the achievement.
Police Chief Jim Layne gave his first report as he officially took over for former chief Tony Ciriello. According to Layne, the ballistic vests used by the officers are out of date and must be updated. Layne was approved to purchase 14 personalized and fitted ballistic vests for the department.
Public works plans on spending up to $15,000 to use crack sealant on numerous roads throughout Syracuse. It is estimated that one block of Harrison Street would cost $500 to repair, so multiple roads will be able to be repaired. The schedule for this project has yet to be decided.
A majority of the meeting was spent in discussion with Syracuse Fire Chief Mickey Scott. Scott was approved to spend roughly $66,000 to pave both of the department’s parking lots. This money will come from the equipment fund.
Scott and the board struggled to come to an agreement about the purchase of a new ambulance. The ambulance in need of replacement is 14 years old and has roughly 125,000 driving miles.
The Turkey Creek Township board already approved the purchase of the chassis for the ambulance, putting the Syracuse board in a bind to approve the rest of the purchase, an estimated $170,000. The board did approve the purchase, but their frustration with Scott’s process was evident. Scott and the Turkey Creek Township purchased the chassis before informing the Syracuse board.
