News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — A new education grant is aimed at supporting people who jumped into the workforce with little college experience, but are viewed by their employers as having strong leadership potential.

The $250,000 grant from the Don Wood Foundation was arranged through OrthoWorx, KEDCO, and Ivy Tech Kosciusko County.

This award will fully fund the next two cohorts of Ivy Tech’s Applied Organizational Leadership Studies program, providing 50 adults across the region with access to high-impact leadership training at no cost.

Allyn Decker, Vice President of Operations and Engagement for OrthoWorx, was asked who this grant could benefit.

“This is really for anyone who is already employed but who is new to supervision or leadership or would be considered a high-potential employee,” Decker said.

Leadership development, he said, is always at the top of the list for companies.

OrthoWorx and the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) will sponsor all tuition, instruction, materials, marketing, and program administration for the AOLS certificate program over the next two years, according to a news release from OrthoWorx.

The initiative directly responds to a growing regional demand for "upskilled supervisors" and emerging leaders capable of advancing into new roles, the release said.

“Leadership development is one of the most consistent needs we hear from local employers,” said Jessica Hauck, Housing & Talent Manager at KEDCO. “This partnership allows us to meaningfully scale a program that equips emerging leaders with practical skills and real advancement opportunities. We’re excited to support another two cohorts and see the ripple effects this investment will create across our community.”

The AOLS program is a flexible, 18-credit certificate built for working adults, offering one evening course at a time from August through May. Coursework includes team leadership, organizational culture, conflict resolution, multicultural leadership, and personal leadership development. Students also earn transferable college credits that can be applied toward an associate degree.

This initiative expands a successful 2025 pilot and will fully fund 25 students per cohort, improving access to leadership development and addressing countywide workforce advancement needs.

“This grant represents a powerful investment in Kosciusko County’s workforce and future,” said Decker.

“The AOLS program has already shown the impact it can make on rising leaders. With this support from the Don Wood Foundation, we’re able to remove financial barriers and open new doors for individuals who want to grow, advance, and contribute even more to our community,” Decker added.

The grant program honors the vision of Don Wood by funding scholarships and grants that help learners earn credentials in fields aligned with the Foundation’s mission, including advanced manufacturing, technology, sales and marketing, organizational leadership, and entrepreneurship.

“We see the potential this program offers the community,” said Laura Macknick, President & CEO, Don Wood Foundation. “The Don Wood Foundation is pleased to invest in programs benefitting people who are ready to learn and better equip themselves for future challenges.”

The AOLS program aligns directly with these priorities by equipping adults with immediately applicable leadership skills while supporting long-term career advancement and employer competitiveness.

“We are thrilled to expand access to the Applied Organizational Leadership Studies program,” said Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne & Kosciusko County Chancellor, Kim Barnett-Johnson. “The support from OrthoWorx, KEDCO, and the Don Wood Foundation helps us reach learners who may never have had the opportunity to pursue college credit or leadership training. This program changes lives, strengthens employers, and elevates our entire region.”

Editor's note: Much of this story comes from our conversation with OrthoWorx officials intended for the public affairs show, In The Know, but also includes additional information about the newly announced Ortho Academies discussed after Wednesday's interview.

By Dan Spalding
News Now Warsaw

WARSAW — OrthoWorx, alongside local orthopedic manufacturers and educators, is working to create a pipeline of talent for job opportunities that has never been seen before in Warsaw.

A collective effort that includes numerous companies, Grace College, Ivy Tech and a consulting firm from Purdue University, are all coordinating with OrthoWorx to prepare students in high school and higher education to be ready to move directly into the local orthopedic industry.

The latest effort involves the establishment of ortho academies that will pair up manufacturers with local school districts.

Paragon Medical is working with Whitko Community Schools and Wawasee School Corporation is partnered with Polywood.

The newest academy was announced earlier this week with Warsaw Community High School and Tippecanoe Valley Schools involving the upcoming launch of the Regional Advanced Manufacturing Pathway (RAMP) program that will be available to students beginning in the 2024-2025 school year.

RAMP will initially rely on four local manufacturers — Instrumental Machine & Development, Medartis, PreMedTec and Zimmer Biomet. The program will be offered to a select group of junior and senior manufacturing pathway students at the Warsaw Area Career Center (WACC).

Through the program, students will have the opportunity to gain fundamental manufacturing skills, hands-on experience, and an internship opportunity with one of the industry partners, according to a news release from WCS.

OrthoWorx turned to an organization at Purdue University – IN-MaC – that helps develop similar programs at high schools across the state and that gained recognition after working to establish one involving Toyota in southern Indiana.

RAMP will initially rely on four local manufacturers — Instrumental Machine & Development, Medartis, PreMedTec and Zimmer Biomet.

OrthoWorx was established in 2009 with funding from the Lilly Endowment and recently experienced a reboot of sorts with a new round of funding from the endowment. That change has allowed the organization to increase staff.

“Our goal is to create employable skilled young people who can go right into industry post-high school because they’ve gotten all this curriculum, along with and the hands-on experience and the on-site mentoring through their and internship opportunities before graduating,” said Allyn Decker, VP of Operations and Engagement, who joined OrthoWorx just a few months ago.

The combined efforts are the biggest organized effort seen locally to help prepare the future workforce.

Decker said he has no doubt about the demand for jobs in the local orthopedic sector.

“They’ve been telling us for years they’ll take every single advanced manufacturing trained person that we can provide,” Decker said.

The demand is so strong, in fact, Zimmer Biomet has established its own internal CNC training program for current employees.

“They essentially have kind of taken things into their own hands in that regard and said, listen, if we can’t get enough skilled workers from the traditional training and college route or the traditional CTE route we’ll take it in-house,” Decker said.

Decker said they want to create a pipeline that will provide economic independence for young people.

“When they’re out of school and can be earning $20 to $30 an hour with amazing full-time benefits and tuition assistance to be able to pursue higher education at low- or no-cost, everybody wins,” Decker said.

OrthoWorx has also worked to develop other programs geared to encourage high school students to consider a career in advanced manufacturing, Two of those include:

Discover ME (Manufacturing Experiences) a week of classroom curriculum and experiential tours each October that involves every eighth-graders in the county who have a chance to learns about career opportunities and tours at at least one manufacturing site with an industry partner.

Another is the Real ME program, a one-day program targeted toward high-school sophomores that creates awareness of local career opportunities and the professional skills needed to succeed.

In another development, Decker said Grace College is establishing a one-year orthopedic MBA program that will include online and in-person learning as well as internships. The program will begin in May and the college hopes to enroll a minimum of a dozen students in its initial effort.

A new era?

Meanwhile, those watching the orthopedic industry in Warsaw could very well look back at the past few years and suggest the local industry is is in the middle of a golden age.

In the past year, the company has seen two international companies — Medartis and Mentore Media — move into Warsaw.

Some of that has to do with the growth of the Warsaw technology park, the growing emergence of KEDCo (the economic development group in Warsaw), and state leadership that has embraced the orthopedic capital of the world and is offering OrthoWorx $30 million in support to attract and retain orthopedic workers into the local market.

Bob Vitoux, president and CEO of OrthoWorx, who’s working with other groups in helping prepare a plan on how to use the $30 million in state money, said the local orthopedic environment is on fire.

"There is just a tremendous amount inertia right now," Vitoux said. "Having been in and around this industry for 30-ish years, I don't remember the amount of energy that I sense that's here."

Part of what’s driving the growth in local orthopedics is innovation and a change that has emerged since covid that has seen the industry embrace the use of surgical centers for orthopedic implants as technology no longer requires inpatient surgery for hips and knees, Vitoux

A few statistics stand out concerning the local implant industry.

Combined, all of the local orthopedic companies include about 10,000 to 12,000 existing jobs in the industry. At the same time, there are roughly 1,000 high school students who are graduating and preparing for careers.

That presents OrthoWorx with two big issues.

"What are we doing to retain as many of those kids as possible in this industry and then attracting new families," Vitoux said.

At the same time, it's a matter of how best to use the future state money in attracting new families to the community.

OrthoWorx has also been presented with a chance to use upward of $30 million in state money — and possibly much more in the future — to develop a plan on how to retain jobs in the industry.

OrthoWorx is currently working on a plan to use the money and will present a multi-faceted proposal to the state budget committee by early next summer.

The organization is working with various groups and community leaders on the endeavor.

"I think the next generation that's coming into the workforce ... really enjoys experiences," Vitoux said.

“There is just a tremendous amount inertia right now,” Vitoux said. “Having been in and around this industry for 30-ish years, I don’t remember the amount of energy that I sense that’s here.”

“What are we doing to retain as many of those kids as possible in this industry and then attracting new families,” Vitoux said.

At the same time, it’s a matter of how best to use the future state money in attracting new families to the community.

Much of what they hope to do is improve the quality of life.

“I think the next generation that’s coming into the workforce … really enjoys experiences,” Vitoux said.

WARSAW — OrthoWorx has announced the appointment of Allyn Decker as the Vice President of Operations & Engagement, reinforcing its dedication to equipping the next generation and enriching community to support the Orthopedic Capital of the World for years to come.

In his new role, Erin Serafino, OrthoWorx’s Talent Director, and Amaris Ackermann, OrthoWorx’s Marketing & Communications Manager, will report to Decker.

By leveraging his extensive experience and broad skillset, he will oversee and contribute to OrthoWorx’s key initiatives: Talent Pipeline, Community Enrichment, and Innovation.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join the OrthoWorx team and look forward to contributing to the many initiatives underway and yet to come,” Decker said.

“This is an exciting time to be focused on OrthoWorx’s mission to build a strong orthopedic pipeline, enrich our community’s amenities so more families and prospective employees want to live and work here, and foster continual innovation so our community remains the Orthopedic Capital of the World. I trust that my leadership experience in industry, higher education, and community development will complement the work of this amazing team.”

Prior to joining OrthoWorx, Decker served as the Director of Community Engagement at Ivy Tech Community College’s Warsaw campus where he was responsible for strengthening existing partnerships and developing new ones within the community, industry, secondary education, and higher education.

In addition to his many roles in higher education, he has crafted programming and training pathways for professional and organizational development including “Lake City University” while serving at Lake City Bank. Decker has also served as the moderator of the Kosciusko Leadership Academy for over 15 years and continues to do so.

In addition to his professional experience, Decker has been extremely active in the community with an extensive list of volunteer roles. He has served on the Board of Directors for Lakeland Christian Academy, the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation and others.

He has also served on committees and coalitions for the Kosciusko Chamber, LaunchPad, Martin Luther King Jr. community committee, Kosciusko County Tobacco Free Coalition, OrthoWorx’s Diversity and many others. Mr. Decker was also named Man of the Year in January of 2023 during the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Dinner.

Bob Vitoux, OrthoWorx President & CEO added, “It’s been a remarkable year for OrthoWorx with the announcement of the $30 million Orthopedic Industry Retention Initiative coming from the state of Indiana in fiscal 2025, the reconstruction and expansion of the OrthoWorx Board of Directors, the hiring of several new talented team members, and now the addition of Allyn Decker as the new leader responsible for our operations and engagement with our higher education partners. I’m confident Allyn’s leadership and addition to our team will begin to be recognizable and measurable in short order, as we continue to strive to be known as Northern Indiana’s Orthopedic Catalyst: Equipping the Next Generation, Enriching Community, and Accelerating Industry.

Times-Union

NORTH WEBSTER - Though all the Kosciusko Leadership Academy white paper projects were considered good this year, only two teams were able to receive an award to help get the projects moving forward.

The monetary awards were announced Tuesday night at the 41st graduation celebration for the KLA Class of 2023 at The Owl’s Nest in North Webster.

Kosciusko County Community Foundation CEO Stephanie Overbey said the Community Foundation holds the KLA Northenor Fund. Each year, the fund awards a grant to KLA that enables KLA to make a cash award to a winning white paper project. The fund was established in 2007 and made possible from gifts by many KLA supporters who wished to honor Jean Northenor, a KLA co-founder.

“It was meant to really rise the level of the white paper projects with an incentive to produce something that is sustainable, that can be accomplished, that we have seed money, which is really exciting,” Overbey said.

This year, $1,893 was available for the Northenor Award from the fund. Because the fund is endowed at the Foundation, Overbey said it will produce an award every single year for forever “so KLA can never stop because otherwise, what would we do with the funding?”

Before KLA moderator Dr. Allyn Decker presented the Northenor Award, Overbey presented the $1,000 Trustee Award on behalf of Suzie Light, a KLA trustee.

“The Trustee Award is given to a white paper team who the KLA trustees feel deserve an award to move their project forward as well,” Overbey said. “This year’s award was made possible by a trustee who recommended a grant from a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation.”

She said the project was chosen because of the impact “this large-scale capital project could have on the health, well-being and economy of Kosciusko County. The trustees felt that Grace College’s application to Lilly Endowment for the implementation of the project showed a commitment to getting the project done and real promise that it might happen. Their hope is that, by receiving the Trustee Award, it would show to Lilly Endowment and to the project team that the project has the support of the community.”

She announced the Trustee Award went to the “Fieldhouse of Dreams” team of Denny Harlan, Chad Hummel, Carol McGregor and Angie Summers.

According to the executive summary of the project, the Fieldhouse of Dreams was proposed as a means to focus on impacting the early years of youth health and wellness development, leading to lifelong habits for individuals, creating an annual economic boost to the county and filling the gap that inclement weather creates for northern Indiana throughout the year. The multi-purpose facility would grant a variety of ways to impact community members through their health and wellness journey. Areas that could create an economic impact could include hosting tournaments/events, creating leagues, opening the facility for outside rentals and establishing new trade shows/conferences.

In presenting the Northenor Award, Decker said the project team was chosen “somewhat on that doability factor, the fact that they were able to get so much done during the course of the academy year. And, also, it had a really, really strong sustainability plan as well.”

He announced the winner of the award was the “Clearly Kosciusko by Choice” team of Logan McDonald, Leo Patino, Jeremy Price and Laura Rothhaar.

To see the stories of people who chose to make their home in Kosciusko County, Rothhaar said the videos can be found on the Clearly Kosciusko website, as well as any of the Visit Kosciusko social media.

The executive summary for Kosciusko by Choice states that it is a marketing campaign highlighting people who have chosen to move to and stay in Kosciusko County. The campaign consists of video interviews and accompanying blog posts which are posted and promoted on a variety of platforms.

The third white paper project was County of Libraries by the team of Morgan Bruner, Dhushyantha Peiris Mulkakandage and Ben Rice. The fourth white paper project was Savor Kosciusko by the team of Dr. Bennett Hollar, Lauren Klusman, Brian Runkel and Josh Silveus.

Early in the graduation ceremony, Decker said the white paper projects have been a part of KLA since the beginning.

“The white papers are our attempt to take what we’ve learned about the county assets, and also some of its challenges, and to think how can we make life in Kosciusko County better. And so, we ask the cadets to join a team to come up with a topic they think is timely and important,” he said. “We offer mini grants in the form of $500, if they choose to apply for one, and that can help provide some working capital during the year.”

Guest speaker for Tuesday’s graduation was Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Rob Parker.

Lois Borkholder, a member of the K-County First white paper project that won the Northenor Award in 2022, gave a presentation on what their project was and where it’s going forward. Her teammates included Kim Strawbridge, Mitchell Hall, Orville Haney and herself.

Borkholder said the idea for K-County First came out of a need expressed by Live Well Kosciusko Executive Director Lisa Harman and the Live Well Kosciusko Community Well-Being Committee for Kosciusko County residents and organizations to have a platform to show appreciation to the first responders who take care of everyone, often at the risk of their own lives.

Decker, along with the board of directors, presented the diplomas to the KLA graduates before the awards presentation.

NORTH WEBSTER – Though all the Kosciusko Leadership Academy white paper projects were considered good this year, only two teams were able to receive an award to help get the projects moving forward.
